Trajan's Markets in Rome. From ancient monument to Museum of the Imperial Forums

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Fine Arts and Cultural Assets Service of the Rome Municipality have jointly organised the exhibition “Trajan's Markets. From ancient monument to Museum of the Imperial Forums” to “represent” Italy abroad. Using DVDs, the exhibition illustrates the history of the monumental complex. Designed as a multipurpose centre for the Forum of Trajan “re-discovered” between 1926 and 1934 and restored as a Roman “market,” the site is currently undergoing state-of-the-art structural and conservative restoration. The recent exhibitions and cultural events held in the Markets have brought it to the attention of the public at large; to this end, Luigi Filetici photographed it during the famous exhibition “Coloured marbles of Imperial Rome” (2002-2003). The reassembly of the frieze of the ?girls with garlands' – specifically for this event – is a preview of the future exhibition design of the Museum of the Imperial Forums (2007), destined to “illustrate” its architecture and place the fragment in its original position within the overall complex.
