Culture and Society in Later Roman Antioch Antioch was one of the pre-eminent cities of the ancient world, comparable with Rome, Constantinople and Alexandria. As a thriving late Roman city between the second and sixth century AD, it was a truly multi-functional and cosmopolitan centre, with administrative, cultural and religious powers, as well as providing an important link on trade routes from the eastern empire to the west Mediterranean.
