The sanctuary of Poseidon on the isthmus of Corinth was at the crossroads of ancient Greece.Traces of the theater built there in 400 B.C. represent one of the earliest examples of theater architecture to have survived. As such it is unusually rich in information for the study of the early history of Greek theater architecture. Elizabeth R. Gebhard, through painstaking excavation and thoughtful interpretation of the remains, has come to several unusual conclusions regarding the form of the early theater. For example, the first theater auditorium appears to have been rectilinear, rather than curvilinear as is generally supposed. Also, she suggests that the scene-building, even in its original form, was probably equipped with a narrow porch or pros-kenion. At all periods during its seven hundred years of activity the theater was used primarily for musical and oratorical contests and thus retained much the same organization probably equipped with a narrow porch or pros-kenion. At all periods during its seven hundred years of activity the theater was used primarily for musical and oratorical contests and thus retained much the same organization. Mrs. Gebhard describes the Isthmian theater with a wealth of detail. She includes plans and photographs and offers comparative material from other ancient theaters. She traces the historical use of the structure and documents various periods of rebuilding and additions to the original theater, including the modernization it underwent in anticipation of an appearance by the Emperor Nero in A.D. 68. The author also provides detailed background information on the forms of the theater.
